School Profile

Austin Friars St Monica's School has a strong reputation in the north of Cumbria and in south-west Scotland for offering high quality independent day-school education. Nursery, Junior and Senior sections provide a seamless education for boys and girls aged 3 - 18 on an attractive 25-acre site in the cathedral city of Carlisle.

Our pupils are provided with every opportunity to develop their talents to the full, growing up in a happy and fulfilling environment where all are valued and encouraged. Traditional values are at the heart of our School community which, at the same time, is forward-thinking and vibrant as it meets the challenges of a changing world.

Austin Friars was established in 1951 by the Hermit Friars of the Order of St Augustine on its present site at the request of the Bishop of Lancaster. St. Monica's School was established in 1985 wholly separately from, though on the same site as, Austin Friars.

In 2003, formal amalgamation of the two Schools established Austin Friars St Monica's as a School for pupils aged 3 - 18. The Augustinian Order took the decision to hand the School on to a new Board of Trustees and to give it autonomy as a charity in its own right.

The School continues to flourish with a capital investment programme allowing for the building of a new science block, new junior school, a dedicated sixth form center, investment in ICT and a new music department. All this gives any child who choses Austin Friars St Monica's school for their education the best grounding for thier future.

Like many Schools originally founded and conducted by a religious order, Austin Friars St Monica's is now entirely under lay management with the last of the Augustinian friars leaving in 2005. The religious foundation of the school remains a high priority in defining the School's ethos. The Order is represented on the Board.
