Hurst Lodge School

see also Reviews | News | Further Information

Founded in 1942, it remains a family owned and operated school. Housed in a large Victorian house, with additional buildings, it is set in grounds of 22 acres. The school offers a broad academic curriculum with a strong emphasis on the creative and performing arts, particularly dance. There are three performing arts studios and links with two local professional theatres. Pupils are encouraged to explore all aspects of theatre as technical crew and designers as well as performers. All pupils are taught dance as part of the curriculum until Year 10, including ballet, modern, jazz, tap and musical theatre. There are also classes throughout the school in singing, composition and musical appreciation. It has a small sixth form, offering A-levels predominantly in art and performing art (eg photography, dance, music), as well as an Early Years National Diploma. Many pupils go on to vocational courses in the arts. Classes are kept small. While mainstream curriculum classes take place during the week, some classes (mostly optional) are held in the evening and rehearsals and practices may be at weekends. The school aims to provide a warm and friendly family atmosphere and to encourage independent learners. It is non-denominational. An enhanced academic curriculum up to Year 9 ensures a broad education. All girls take part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and in debating, careers education, sport and personal, social & health education. There is some sporting success, particularly in netball, riding and synchro-swimming.
