School Profile
About
Our school is a girls' independent selective day school which became part of the Girls' Day School Trust in June 2007. There are approximately 770 pupils between the ages of 3 and 18.
History
In the great era of expansion of education for girls, a committee of local church people founded the school in 1878. It later came under the control of the Diocese of Peterborough, whose Board of Education appointed the majority of the Governors. Throughout its history, it has contributed to the education of girls from a large area of Northamptonshire and beyond and a wide social range. On the abolition of the Direct Grant System, the school reverted to independent status and is now in its next exciting phase of development, as a member of the Girls' Day School Trust. Our school continues to offer bursaries and scholarships.
Ethos
We welcome girls from all religious backgrounds and none; the GDST is a secular organisation. However, our Anglican Foundation gives us a tradition of promoting Christian values throughout all areas of school life. In our daily assemblies and in all our dealings with one another, we emphasise tolerance, respect for others and openness to the truth wherever it is found. We expect all members of the school to help foster an ethos of caring and consideration.
Situation
As a result of the generosity of the Cripps Foundation, the High School moved in autumn 1992 from its town centre site to new, purpose-built premises on the edge of Northampton. The Sports Complex, which houses a swimming pool, squash courts, hockey pitches and various other amenities, opened at the beginning of 1990 and an all-weather pitch has been added. The school is situated on the Newport Pagnell Road (B526) and, being close to the southern ring road, is easily accessible from all directions. Transport arrangements are made for girls who travel to Northampton by bus or train.
Premises
Our buildings are equipped with the most up-to-date facilities which means that we are one of the most modern schools in all Northamptonshire and, indeed, neighbouring counties. We aim to provide an education for all our pupils, which is in keeping with our superb amenities and our commitment to developing the full potential of each individual. This year, we are creating a new Sixth Form Centre and enhancing further junior school facilities.
