Admissions and Selection
Admissions and selection for private schools
Many junior schools and some senior schools admit pupils on a first-come-first-served basis, so early application is recommended.
Many independent senior schools set some form of entrance test. The difficulty of the tests and the standard required for admission vary and will be specific to the type of school. For example, most urban day schools set their own entrance examinations (usually in January) and require a high standard of performance. This is a reflection of the education the schools offer, making high demands of very able children.
Schools will also want to interview your child and, if changing school, will ask for a report from the Headteacher of your child’s present school. Interviews can be a daunting process for anyone, but practice and coaching in technique can be enormously helpful. Parents wishing to support their child in this step towards admission may wish to consider professional help for interview technique and practice.
