Child Guardianship
Why are guardians required for some schoolchildren?
Many parents living overseas choose to educate their children in the UK or Ireland. As the parents are not resident in these countries, British law and Irish law requires that each child receiving full-time education for more than 12 weeks must have a legally appointed guardian.
A guardian may be a relative such as an adult sibling or grandparent, or a family friend, but many parents choose to find a guardian with the assistance of a professional agency, such as Gabbitas Educational Consultants. The UK Border Agency provides full details of all requirements for those from overseas wishing to study in Britain.
