School Profile

St Mary's Hall is a day and boarding school for girls aged 3-18. Established in 1836, St Mary's Hall is one of Britain's oldest schools for girls. Our extensive grounds overlook the sea and are within easy reach of Brighton & Hove's historic city centre. The cultural buzz and artistic dynamism of Brighton & Hove make it one of the most exciting cities in Britain. London is 55 minutes away by train, Heathrow Airport easily accessible, and Gatwick Airport only a 40-minute drive away.
The School has over 300 students, a quarter of whom are boarders. St Mary's Hall has a long tradition of educating and caring for students of many different nationalities.
St Mary's Hall offers a safe and happy environment where students are encouraged to realise their full potential in academic, sporting, cultural and social activities.

Educating for Confidence
Our aim is to develop the personal qualities necessary to make a positive contribution to a changing and unpredictable world. This requires each individual in the community to be ready for lifelong learning, to be adaptable, to have the courage to face challenges, to acquire transferable skills, to be able to work independently and as part of a team, and to show self-discipline, commitment, flexibility and openness to change. "The quality of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils throughout the school is outstanding" - The Independent Schools Inspectorate.

At St Mary's Hall, we encourage a culture of learning, respect, knowledge and achievement, focussing upon the individual development of each pupil and preparing our pupils for life as young responsible adults. Great emphasis is placed on establishing sound personal relationships. Support and advice is given to integrate every student in the School community at all levels.

Curriculum
St Mary's Hall accepts pupils with a wide range of ability and has a very good record of helping all to achieve academic success. A wide range of subjects is on offer throughout the School at GCSE and A Level. Each pupil's programme is carefully monitored to suit the individual.

Extra-curricular Activities
There are many extra-curricular opportunities, which aim to give every pupil a chance to 'shine' in some respect.

Boarding
Two boarding houses are situated on the School grounds. Our Sixth Form boarders are housed primarily in single study-bedrooms close to individual shower rooms in Elliot House. Whilst our junior boarders live in Venn House, in single or twin rooms. St Mary's Hall offers boarding as early as the age of 8. Students come from the local community and from all over the world to make St Mary's Hall their home. A caring, dedicated and friendly house staff provides a secure, comfortable and happy environment for our students. The focus of boarding life at St Mary's Hall is the personal and academic development of each individual student. Boarding is about belonging to a community, sharing and learning to become a team player. Our community is a thriving one, enriched by the contribution of each individual. We offer full, weekly and flexi-boarding options.
