Originally known at "Wareleia", the village is Anglo-Saxon in origin and was mentioned in the Doomsday book in 1086, when the population was just 38. The village is the third highest point in Essex at 368 feet above sea level. It is an area surrounded by parks and has many scenic walks within the village itself making it a primary location for an educational site.
